"I'm here for you!" The World through a Dog's Heart

So I'm a dog and really enjoyed the article about the joys and sorrows of doing dog care. It warms my heart to see how much love is shared. It’s good for humans to put their feelings into words. As a dog involved, I see things from a different perspective.

Separation is hard, it causes anxiety, maybe even trauma. I like routine—things the same every day. And it’s a bummer when you get taken to a strange place, are dropped off and your owner disappears, saying something silly like, “Have a good time!” Then they’re gone. How do you know if you’ll ever see them again?

So it’s like starting a new life. Fundamental questions emerge: Where am I? Who are these people? What are those strange smells?

If things are okay, then I start to think about going about living again. Where’s my food? Where’s the water? When do I get to go on a walk? Where do I sleep?

I enjoy meeting new people. Each one is unique. And each one is the same—mindless creatures, with minds running out of control, busy, busy, busy. What are their minds full of? —the past, the future, worries, desires, longings, regrets? They’re never here, right now, in this present moment, always somewhere else. They need to stop, breathe, smell the flowers, remember that they’re here now, mysteriously and wonderfully alive.

I’m simple. I’m just living now. I’m awake, aware, attentive, and accepting of who I am, where I am, what’s happening. I’m just glad to be alive as a wonder of the natural world. I live in the moment, as if it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’m not philosophical or religious, just filled with spirit, full of life, as you are too.

That’s why you like me, maybe even love me. I’m right here! When you look into my eyes you know it too. I am here! And I see you, and you are here. Let’s live! Let’s come alive! We can love each other even if you’re afraid that I won’t live forever. We’re here now! Let’s take a walk! And don’t forget the treats!
