98 years, what a miracle! Not many people get to celebrate so many birthdays. A rebellious Tokyo girl who survived war, sexual and racial discrimination, and other hardships, our dragon mom guarded and guided us with all her heart and soul, then sent us out into the world. Knowing that this safety net of unconditional love was always there, we were empowered to fight with our fears and fly to our greatest heights. Our firm roots enabled us to venture forth on our winding routes of adventure into the mysteries of the great unknown. She taught us how to live mindfully, responsibly, and naturally, as if we were simply part of this world, doing what was needed to survive, thrive and keep going in the face of adversity. Tireless effort was the way each day was to be lived, with meaning to be found in the struggle itself and moments of dwelling in beauty to nourish the weary soul.
