October 1 at noon
Hope to see you at a free book talk at USC Shinso Ito Center for Japanese Religions and Culture, October 1, noon, East Asian Seminar Room, 101C, Doheny Memorial Library, University Park Campus in LA. I'll be just returning from Kamakura and Koyasan in Japan where I've been actively involved in a dynamic movement integrating Zen and other forms of Buddhist practices with the art and science of Mindfulness. Some leaders in Buddhist communities are stressing the need for more flexibility and less emphasis on strict rituals in their practices while some social scientists like me are drawn to learning from the rich cultural tradition and deep wisdom in Buddhism.

Mindfulness in Medicine
Mindfulness has been part of health care for several decades and its role is increasingly growing. It has found popularity in stress reduction and wellness programs for patients as research provides more evidence for its effectiveness, not only for patients but also in self-care for medical professionals. These seminars will provide experiential learning about mindfulness and my "heartfulness" education program for leadership and wellness at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
